India has a rich tradition of miniature painting – an ancient art form small in scale and high in detail. After studying miniatures during a study abroad to India, I embarked on my own interpretation of the craft. Displayed here is mainly local subject matter executed in an Indian style. While doing this project, I felt like an outsider looking in – using familiar and comfortable Western subjects with a completely new and foreign approach.

My focus is on conventionality – when to adhere to its formal rules and when to challenge them. I continue to explore pattern, borders, and the culture of color with the new medium of gouache.
