Over a seven-month period of time, I was a volunteer co-director of a large mural completed with several teenaged female inmates. Featuring a symbolic and colorful Egyptian theme, the mural intends to elicit thoughts of natural harmony, order, and the beauty of womanhood.
The mural’s design was an ongoing process, which often changed with every weekly visit depending on what was needed at different times. The project was an exercise in the flexibility of thought, as it was necessary to adapt to the various challenges facing the mural and the number of different people working on it.
In the spring of 2008, before the mural was completed, I received the Donald T. Bliss, Sr. Community Service Award for my efforts in spearheading the project.
